Safeguarding the UK’s Chemical Future


In response to an industry letter to the UK Government calling for reduced data requirements for chemicals ‘of most concern to the UK’, Fidra outline key concerns to the proposed changes and alternatives ways forward.

On 9th February 2021, a group of industry associations wrote a joint letter to the UK Government calling for changes that would require UK REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) to hold full datasets for only a minority list of specified chemicals of ‘most concern to the UK’. The full letter was not made publicly available but was described within an article by the Financial Times. The proposal represents a significant divergence from the principles behind current UK chemical management, more closely aligning to the pre-REACH system that was deemed unsatisfactory over 18 years ago...
