Equality, diversity and inclusion statement

We believe uniqueness is powerful. We recognise that not everyone has equal opportunities but are determined to take steps to remove barriers and strive for a more equitable society. We take the broadest possible view of diversity including the protected characteristics and lived experiences.

Fidra is an environmental organisation that aims to continuously learn, improve and adapt. Fidra’s mission of striving for sustainable societies and healthy ecosystems cannot be achieved without inclusion. Fidra are committed to addressing diversity and inclusion in our workplace policies, our recruitment practices, approach to communications and culture with a view to achieving equitable outcomes.  As part of our commitment, we have developed an equality, diversity and inclusion, anti-racism and human rights-based strategy and action plan.

A people and planet friendly employer

Fidra recognises the role we play as an employer in supporting sustainable societies. Fidra aims to be a carbon conscious employer, with a goal of minimising the environmental impact of our own work.

Fidra’s office has good public transport links, and staff are encouraged to cycle or walk to work through the provision of storage and showering facilities. These facilities also lend themselves to lunch hour activities for staff who like to take a dip in the sea, run along the beach or walk up the North Berwick Law.  Staff also enjoy the on site wildlife garden, the nearby beach and comfortable kitchen/staff room. Kitchen facilities help staff reduce personal single use packaging.

Procurement policies follow reduce, reuse, repair and recycle principles. Procurement of products seeks to limit the use of chemicals with hazardous properties.  Procurement of food, drink, and catering prioritises palm oil free, Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance certified, organic, locally produced and vegetarian/vegan options.  Food waste is composted and used for Fidra’s wildlife garden.  Our energy suppliers are ‘green’ suppliers.

A flexible employer

Fidra has a creative thriving office and team environment that works together to meet the charity’s needs. Fidra offers a range of flexible working options, including working part time,  variable start and finish times, a hybrid working policy allowing staff some flexibility to work from home with the option to work from the office full-time if that is more appropriate.

A supportive employer

In addition to supporting active travel, hybrid working and providing comfortable office facilities in the seaside town of North Berwick, Fidra are continually reviewing and developing our policies to support employees. We offer an employee assistance programme, generous annual leave, compassionate leave, sick leave, and enhanced family leave policies. Staff are given opportunities for professional development, receive a generous 8% employer pension contribution and are included on Fidra’s Group Life Assurance policy.
