RFID for transparency, traceability and end-of-life handling for textiles

An investigation into RFID technology as a possible solution to improve processing efficiency of discarded textiles and garments.

To investigate possible solutions for efficient handling of the increasing amounts of textiles and garments being discarded each year, this project was granted funding from Vinnova under the call Innovationer för ett Hållbart Samhälle 2018. The project was finalised on the 30th of June 2021 and the consortium comprised some 20 companies, which represented many businesses within the range from research and development, textile and fashion, sorting and recycling, charity and second-hand, trimmings and smart labelling through standardisation.

The main objectives were to investigate and build knowledge regarding the possibilities to utilise a digital information system, adapted for the textile and fashion industry, based on RFID technology, where information availability, transparency and traceability would be crucial to enable and facilitate handling of textiles at their end-of-life.
