Case Study - Restructa: Using XRF technology for POPs detection
Chemical flame retardants (CFRs) are widely used in a range of consumer products including upholstered furniture, mattresses and electronics. A number of previously commonly used CFRs have subsequently been classified as Persistant Organic Pollutants (POPs) and must be destroyed where present in waste, often through incineration. A lack of chemical labelling makes determining the presence of POPs in waste products, such as furniture and electronics, challenging and a financial burden for local authorities, recyclers and waste managers and progress towards a circular economy.
This case study highlights how Scottish based recycling and waste management company Restructa have developed and implemented innovative systems to rapidly identify levels of POPs in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) technology. The potential application of this technology to determine the presence of POPs in waste upholstered domestic seating (WUDS) is also explored.
