Achieving Cleaner Bioresources: Future Soil health and Circular Economy Perspectives
Bioresources are a source of soil health-enhancing organic matter and essential crop nutrients but they are most beneficial when they are free from contamination. Valuable nutrients are recycled to reduce reliance on inorganic fertilisers and extraction of non-renewable mineral and fossil fuel resources. However, treated sewage sludge (biosolids) and other biowastes (manures, food waste composts) often contain persistent chemical contaminants and microplastics that have detrimental impacts on soil health, particularly soil biodiversity which underpins critical soil processes. Upstream and downstream solutions must be implemented by industry stakeholders if hidden contaminant dangers, that remain poorly monitored and understood, are to be tackled.
