Management of PFAS pesticides – Danish Case Study
This case study reveals how Denmark is leading the way to phase out ‘forever chemicals’ in pesticides and beyond, and what the UK can learn from their approach.
Key findings:
- PFAS are widely used in pesticides across the EU and UK.
- In 2025, Denmark agreed to restrict six PFAS active substances used in over 30 pesticide products, recognising the risks to public health and the environment.
- PFAS pesticides are widely used across the UK, with over 10.6 million hectares of arable land sprayed in 2022 alone.
- Mefentrifluconazole, a PFAS active substance now withdrawn in Denmark, increased in use on arable crops in the UK by 755% between 2019 and 2022.
- Rivers in the UK are already widely polluted with PFAS, including TFA, an ultrashort chain PFAS often formed from the breakdown of larger PFAS, such as those used in pesticides.
- PFAS pesticides must be captured in the UK government’s wider plans on PFAS to protect water sources, public health and the environment.
