Forever chemicals in the food aisle: PFAS content of UK supermarket and takeaway packaging

This report focuses on PFAS-use in UK food packaging, considering whether PFAS is currently used in the UK food sector, and to what extent.

We identified packaging containing significant levels of PFAS in 8 of the 9 major UK supermarkets tested, and 100% of takeaways. PFAS was identified in 95% of the samples sent for TOrF testing, of which 90% are considered to be above the level expected from background contamination. We therefore conclude that the use of PFAS in UK food packaging is widespread, across retailers and across product types.
