Forever chemicals in the food aisle: PFAS content of UK supermarket and takeaway packaging

This report focuses on PFAS-use in UK food packaging, considering whether PFAS is currently used in the UK food sector, and to what extent.

Fidra utilised an innovative ‘bead test’ method to carry out preliminary screening of a large range (n = 92) of food packaging. This method relies on the opposing polarity between olive oil and fluorinated molecules, with an oil droplet forming a distinct bead in the presence of PFAS. From this Fidra identified that 30% of the tested packaging was ‘likely to contain PFAS’.
