The Impacts & Solutions for Chemical Flame Retardant Use in UK Mattresses: Stakeholder Perspectives and Economic Analysis

A study investigating the perspectives of industry experts on chemical flame-retardant (CFR) use in mattresses and the impacts on product sustainability. Using five potential future states, the report deliberates possible ways forwards, including revisions to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 and reductions in CFR use. For each scenario, fire safety, public and environment health, and economic impacts are considered and reviewed. The report calls for a “systemic approach to fire safety standards”, with a stronger focus on “smoke toxicity, environmental sustainability, environmental and human health, and economic viability”.
